Question on Dutch healthcare and allergy

Hi,

 

I will soon relocate to Netherlands  and I dont really understand insurances, I really need your help.

 

Please let me know if english posting isnt allowed.

 

I'd like to know what is usually done in dutch healthcare regarding severe dust mite / mold allergy (I dont know what it is since I havent taken the tests yet) and what treatments are covered by the insurance. Also, are allergy shots used?

Thank you for your question. Unfortunatly treatment for mite allergy is not covered in the basic insurance/additional insurance. After you are insured in the Netherlands it's important to find a GP. We can help you find a GP close to your address. In most medical situations the GP is the first visit in the Netherlands. The GP will be able to advise you on tests regarding allergies.

Hi, first off, thank you for helping me out.

 

It sucks to hear its not covered... As in, no help at all? What about other insurances other than ZK? What if my GP thinks I need it?

 

I havent taken the test yet and I'm not even 100% sure my allergy is to mites. What if its not? Is the test covered at least?

 

I kinda have a grasp of how general practitioner visits work, its the same over here. Do you have to go to the GP's house in the netherlands?

Visits to a GP are covered through the basic health insurances. If you need to be test on allergies this is covered by the insurance as well, though you have to take in account that these costs also fall under the mandatory deductible excess (eigen risico).

No, it is the regular dutch Customer Service line. For direct contact with English speaking staff, you can dial 071-7510071.

 

Well, if I understand your messages correctly, you are not yet sure what the cause of your problems are, and that is why you want to have some tests effectuated, correct?

 

The tests might indicate a different source than mites. So having the test done seems like a prudent idea, to at least know what the cause of your discomfort is!

As soon as that is cleared up, we can have a more substantial and to-the-point talk about a specific treatment that is required, as your GP will have given you more information about what he thinks should remedy your problem.

@LockDownyou received a few answers from my colleagues, which I'd like to summarize and add to. 

 

If you want to know wether you have allergies you can go to the general practitioner. A lot of GP's still work from home, some have an office (usually with a few other GP's). When the GP does the entire research him/herself, the procedure is completely covered by your basic insurance. 

 

Costs for laboratory research (or if you need to be diagnosed in the hospital) are also covered, but please be aware that the own risk (mandatory excess) applies. 

 

There is only coverage for the cost of medication prescribed by the GP. To check if medication is covered, you take the prescription to the pharmacy. They will tell you if it is covered or not, and to what extent. For medication the own risk (mandatory excess) also applies.

 

There is no coverage for any medication that is not prescribed by the GP, there are however a lot self-care products available in local drug stores, which don't require a prescription. These costs are not covered.

 

In addition, there are also matrasses and sheets designed for people with mite allergies. Cost for these are not covered. We have however made a discount deal with allergiezorg.nl. If you have an insurance with Zilveren Kruis, you are able to use this discount.

I'm asking for information because I understand that I need to have a grasp of the financial side of this issue (and others) before making a choice.

 

Anyway, due to my symptoms I think that my GP may recommend allergy shots, and its very bad news that it wouldnt be covered in the basic package. What would you guys recommend doing about this?

I am rading this issue. I think it is strange that the costs of allergy-treatment are not met by the insurance. Could I get an explanation? Why is this? Does it mean that the costs of an specialist, called, allergoloog, will not be restituted in the " basisverzekering" ( basic insurance). How could that be? I would like an explanation based on the " polisvoorwaarden" : where can I find this exception of specialist care?

Hey Feina, the issue in this case is that some shots are not included in the basic insurance. Which shots are covered is registerred in the "GVS". The issue for this community member has been resolved in private message.
